About Jazz Band at GHS
Jazz Ensemble offers more exposure to students, as they will be participating in a smaller ensemble. Because of this, they will have to be very accountable for their own work to not be a detriment to the rest of the group; it provides musical independence.
Why offer jazz band? (a few reasons)
Jazz is a significant part of American heritage and has great historical significance. It is recognized by the United States Congress as an art form, also opening up huge cross-curricular opportunities in historical and sociological context of America’s growth and development.
A comprehensive music curriculum should address as many aspects of a musical landscape that is comprised of many cultures, ethnicities, styles, and origins as possible. Essentially, offering students a variety of opportunities within our music program.
What is jazz Band?
A jazz band is a performing ensemble comprised of a rhythm section (drum set, percussion, bass guitar, piano, and guitar), reeds, and brass instruments. Typically, it is one player per part. The ensemble performs jazz music in varying styles from swing to funk.
What do students learn?
Students gain independence on their instrument by being forced to own their part individually. Students will learn the fundamentals of performing in a big band, gain a better understanding of the variety of jazz styles, and understand the context of jazz history within U.S. history. Students will continually build on their understanding of improvising with a big band.
Meeting Schedule
Jazz Band meets regularly on Mondays and Wednesdays post-marching season from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in the High School Band Room. Concerts and events will be posted on the calendar page of this website.
