Jazz Band Audition Information
November 13, 2024 - 3:30 - 5 p.m.
Each student wanting to be in the GHS “Groove Train” Jazz Ensemble will need to participate in a short audition.
We are holding auditions for a few reasons:
1) This will give the opportunity to place students well on what part and spot they have earned within the ensemble.
2) This will let each student be heard individually. This audition is much more about placing students well within the ensemble rather than keeping students out. That is not the goal.
3) This will give students who are continually working hard the opportunity to be heard and find deserved success - seniority does not guarantee reward!
Why?
When?
November 13, 2023 - 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the band room.
Students will audition by playing the following:
As Many Major Scales of their choosing. These should be (1) in the swing style, (2) at a minimum of MM=100 bpm, and (3) played up to the 9th degree, with an arpeggio up to the 9th degree (1, 3, 5, 7, 9). Students should be careful to use appropriate articulations and play fluently. Remember, it is always better to play slower than requested but proficiently rather than faster and sloppy. Have questions about the format? Ask!
Percussion will be requested to perform major scales as well as a swing, shuffle, and Bossa nova groove on the drum set (if desired to play set).
Auditions will be judged upon the following:
Number of Scales Played (more weight given to those that play more scales well)
Note Accuracy
Rhythmic Consistency
Fluency of Swing Style
Tone Quality
Intonation
Full Chromatic Scale to Demonstrate Range. This should be straight eighth notes, at a minimum of MM = 80 bpm.

You’ll need to scroll down slightly to see the PDF and backing track links.
First year members/Freshmen are welcome to use the Junior All-State Jazz Excerpts.
Any second year or beyond members must use the All-State Jazz Excerpts.
Be sure you read the PDF’s. Most will play the written excerpt with some improvisation.
